Product Overview

Woodrich Brand Deep Penetrating Timber Oil Wood Stain (1 Gallon) is a premium, professional-grade oil-based exterior wood stain formulated to protect and beautify your outdoor living spaces. Engineered for effortless application, this penetrating wood sealer delivers flawless, streak-free results for DIY homeowners and professional contractors alike.

Whether you are restoring an weathered surface or sealing a brand-new installation, this formulation functions perfectly as a:

  • Cedar deck stain and sealer
  • Pressure-treated pine fence stain
  • Exterior wood siding stain
  • Log cabin oil finish

Why Choose Woodrich Brand Timber Oil?

  • No Lap Marks or Runs: Because this formula dives deep into the wood grain to replenish old, dry wood fibers, it will not overlap, run, or leave drip marks. First-time users can confidently achieve a seamless, beautiful finish.
  • Advanced UV Protection: Unlike standard paraffinic stains that quickly fade, our formula is loaded with premium trans-oxide pigments. This provides vastly superior UV coverage, color stability, and weather defense.
  • Versatile Wood Care: This deeply hydrating penetrating timber oil is highly effective as both a restorative treatment for aged wood and a preventative protectant for new wood.

When Your Deck Stain Keeps Cracking and Peeling

Most deck stains sold at retail stores are water-based or film-forming products. They sit on the surface of the wood and form a coating that eventually cracks and peels as the wood expands and contracts through seasonal temperature and moisture changes. When that happens, you’re stuck stripping the failed finish before you can restain, which means buying stripping products, renting or hauling out a pressure washer, and losing a full weekend to prep work you shouldn’t have needed.

Timber Oil is a 100% oil-based, deep-penetrating wood stain with no water in the formula. Instead of forming a film on the surface, it soaks into the wood fibers and occupies the space where moisture would otherwise get in. There’s no film on top of the wood to crack or peel. Woodrich Brand guarantees it.

How Timber Oil Protects Wood

Timber Oil uses trans-oxide pigments for UV protection and color that holds up over time. It contains antifungal agents tested against more than 250 known sources of mold and mildew. Despite being 100% oil-based, it is low VOC and compliant even in the Northeast Corridor, which enforces stricter VOC regulations than California.

The coverage rate is 150 square feet per gallon. This 1-gallon size works well for smaller projects like railings, stairs, a section of fencing, outdoor furniture, or touch-ups on a previously stained surface. For a full deck, the 5-gallon pail covers 750 square feet.

What Wood Species It Works On

Timber Oil is formulated for softwoods: cedar, pressure-treated pine, cypress, and redwood. It works on decks, fences, wood siding, log cabins, docks, pergolas, and outdoor furniture made from these species. It is suitable for both new wood and weathered wood that has been properly cleaned and brightened.

Timber Oil is not designed for dense exotic hardwoods like ipe, teak, mahogany, cambara, or garapa. Those species require a different formulation. For hardwood projects, use the Hardwood Wiping Stain instead.

If you’re not sure what species your wood is, text a photo to the Project Support Hotline at (636) 288-8512 and the Woodrich team will help you identify it.

Application and Drying

Timber Oil can be applied by brush, roller, or sprayer. It won’t overlap, run, or leave drip marks during application, which means even first-time users can get clean, consistent results without worrying about lap marks.

Apply when temperatures are above 40°F. At 70°F or above, the stain dries in 2 to 3 days and is walkable in approximately 2 hours. Clean up with mineral spirits.

Prep Before Staining

For weathered or previously stained wood, clean the surface with EFC-38 Wood Cleaner, then brighten and neutralize the wood with Citralic Brightener before staining. This two-step prep restores the wood’s natural pH and opens the grain for better stain penetration.

If the wood has a heavy existing finish (solid stain, paint, polyurethane), use HD-80 Heavy Duty Stripper instead of EFC-38, followed by Citralic.

For new wood, a light cleaning and brightening is still recommended before the first coat. Allow the wood to dry completely after brightening (typically 24 to 48 hours of dry weather) before applying stain.

If you want everything bundled together, the Timber Oil Full Restoration Kits include cleaner, brightener, and stain matched to your project size, and save roughly 10% compared to buying each product separately.

Easy Long-Term Maintenance

When it’s time to refresh the finish (typically 3 to 4 years on vertical surfaces in full sun, approximately 2 years on horizontal deck surfaces with full sun exposure), you clean the surface and apply a fresh coat. No stripping required. For routine cleaning between reapplications, water or a very mild OxiClean solution is all you need. Do not use EFC-38 on a previously stained deck for simple maintenance cleaning.

Available Colors

Timber Oil comes in 6 options: Warm Honey Gold, Brown Sugar, Amaretto, Western Cedar, Signature Brown, and Clear Advantage. Colors can be mixed together to create custom blends.

Not sure which color is right for your wood? The Timber Oil Sample Color Kit includes a 2 oz bottle of each pigmented color for $15, and the full $15 is credited toward your next Timber Oil purchase.

How Much Do You Need

Timber Oil covers 150 square feet per gallon across all sizes and colors. Measure the length and width of your surface, multiply to get total square footage, then divide by 150.

For example, a set of deck stairs and railings totaling 100 square feet would use most of this 1-gallon container. A 12 x 20 foot deck (240 square feet) would require about 1.6 gallons, so the 5-gallon pail at 750 square feet of coverage would be the better value with room for touch-ups.

  • As long as the temperature during the day is above 70 degrees, the timber oil stain will dry in 2-3 days.  The odor from the stain will typically go away after the stain has dried.
  • You can apply the brightener right away after cleaning.  If there are puddles of water, try to broom those off before applying the brightener.  There is no maximum amount of time you can wait, as long as you apply the brightener at some point before you stain.
  • Yes, you can usually wait up to about three weeks before the sun will start causing the wood to lost its natural color.
  • Yes. Fence stain application temperature is important. You can apply Timber Oil as long as the temperature is above freezing. The stain will take longer to dry in colder temperatures. On the other hand, you need to apply Hardwood Wiping Stain when temperatures are above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Yes. Using exterior wood stains or sealers is an excellent way in order to protect outdoor wood furniture.
  • You can use either a deep penetrating stain or a hardwood wiping stain on outdoor pressure-treated wood and pine furniture.
  • You can use either a deep penetrating wood stain or a hardwood wiping stain on outdoor wood furniture. The penetrating stain will finish more flat where the wiping stain will give the furniture a bit of luster. If your furniture is an exotic hardwood like Teak or Ipe, it is best to stick with the Hardwood Wiping Stain.
  • Sure, rinse the surface with water and allow it to dry.  Then you can give the wood another light application.  This time around it should not require nearly as much product because you are just freshening up the surface.  Wipe any excess product off so you leave the surface damp, but not wet.
  • If the temperature is in the 70's its usually safe to walk across the deck with clean shoes after about 2 hours.  We don't recommend scheduling any dance parties for at least a day or two.  If the wood is in the full sun, that will help the stain dry a little quicker.  When the wood is in the shade, or the temperature is cooler, it can take longer for the stain to dry. To replace deck furniture before the wood is completely dry, you can use shoe coverings.  These slip on covers will prevent you from tracking dirt into the finish. Older wood that absorbs a lot more oil can also take longer to dry.
  • Absolutely! Woodrich Brand uses transparent oxide pigments. So mixing the colors together is extremely easy.  We offer sample color kits so that you can test our stock colors. You can also experiment with blends to find the perfect color tone for your project.
