Description
Product Description
The professional-grade oil-based exterior wood stain is specially formulated to penetrate dense exotic hardwoods like Ipe, Teak, and Mahogany while delivering maximum UV protection and water resistance. It utilizes trans-oxide pigments and a wipe-on, wipe-off application to provide a durable matte finish that resists graying, mold, and mildew without peeling or cracking. Why Exotic Hardwoods Need a Different Stain
Dense tropical hardwoods like ipe, teak, mahogany, cambara, and garapa have a tight grain structure that resists absorption. Standard deck stains can’t penetrate properly. They pool on the surface, cure unevenly, and fail within months. If you’ve tried a conventional stain on an exotic hardwood deck and watched it peel or wear off prematurely, the problem wasn’t your technique. It was the product.
Woodrich Brand’s Hardwood Wiping Stain is an oil-based finish engineered specifically for hardwoods that reject other stains. Each gallon covers up to 300 square feet.
How the Wipe-On Formula Works
The Hardwood Wiping Stain uses micro-ground trans-oxide pigments locked into place by long oil alkyd resins. This combination is designed to perform within the limited penetration that dense hardwoods allow. You brush, roll, or spray the stain onto the wood, then wipe the excess off with a dry rag. The result is a smooth, even, semi-transparent finish with a slight luster that highlights the natural grain.
The pigment and resin solids content in this formula is significantly higher than what you’ll find in most hardwood finishes. That’s what allows it to protect effectively even on species like ipe, where penetration depth is minimal. The trans-oxide pigments provide UV protection, while the alkyd resins lock everything in place for lasting adhesion.
It Won’t Crack or Peel
Because this is a penetrating oil-based finish, it doesn’t form the kind of surface film that leads to cracking, peeling, or flaking. When it’s time to recoat, you clean the surface and apply a fresh coat. No stripping or sanding required.
Application Details
Apply when temperatures are above 60°F. Brush, roll, or spray the stain on, then wipe with a clean dry rag. The wipe-on method gives you control over the final appearance and prevents excess product from sitting on the surface. Even first-time users can achieve a consistent, professional-looking finish.
Clean up with mineral spirits.
Available Colors
The Hardwood Wiping Stain comes in four semi-transparent colors: Warm Honey Gold, Brown Sugar, Amaretto, and Western Cedar. Each color is designed to enhance the natural grain of exotic hardwoods rather than cover it.
Not sure which color will look right on your wood? The Hardwood Wiping Stain Sample Color Kit includes a 2 oz bottle of each color for $15, enough to test all four on your actual wood in your actual lighting. The $15 is credited toward your full-size purchase. You can also mix colors together to create custom blends.
Who This Product Is For (and Who It Isn’t)
Use the Hardwood Wiping Stain on dense exotic hardwoods: ipe, teak, mahogany, cambara, garapa, tigerwood, and similar tropical species. It’s used by homeowners, architects, builders, and refinishing contractors working with hardwood decks, docks, railings, outdoor furniture, and siding.
If your wood is cedar, pressure-treated pine, cypress, or redwood, this is not the right product. Those are softwoods and need Timber Oil Deep Penetrating Wood Stain instead.
Surface Prep Before Staining
Proper surface preparation makes or breaks the final result. Before applying the Hardwood Wiping Stain, clean the wood with EFC-38 Wood Cleaner, then brighten and neutralize with Citralic Wood Brightener. Citralic restores the wood’s natural tone and opens the grain for better stain absorption. Allow the wood to dry completely (24 to 48 hours of dry weather) before staining.
If your wood has an existing heavy coating that needs to come off first, use HD-80 Heavy Duty Wood Stripper before cleaning and brightening.
Need all three steps in one package? The Hardwood Restoration Kits bundle the cleaner, brightener, and stain together at about 10% less than buying each separately.
How Much to Order
Each gallon covers approximately 300 square feet. Measure the length and width of your surface and multiply to get total square footage, then divide by 300.
For example, a 12 x 20 foot deck is 240 square feet. One gallon would cover that with some left over for touch-ups. For larger projects, the 5-gallon size covers up to 1,500 square feet.
